In a surprising turn of events, the United States has reportedly reached out to China to initiate tariff negotiations, following President Donald Trump’s steep hike of import duties to 145% on Chinese goods. The move has added pressure on an already strained trade relationship, prompting Beijing to react cautiously, yet firmly.

The claim was made by Yuyuan Tantian, a social media account tied to Chinese state media, which stated that the U.S. contacted China “through multiple channels” to discuss the tariff issue. However, Chinese officials have publicly denied that any formal talks have begun, raising questions about Washington’s strategy and intentions.

While Beijing continues to brand the tariffs as economic bullying, it has taken pragmatic steps—such as quietly exempting some U.S.-made pharmaceuticals and tech products from its own 125% retaliatory tariffs. Yet, the message from China remains clear: no negotiations will happen unless the U.S. shows sincerity and takes concrete action.

Experts say Beijing is weighing its options carefully. “China needs to observe closely, even force out the US’ true intentions, to maintain the initiative,” the Yuyuan Tantian post said.

Despite conflicting signals, Trump claimed recently that Chinese President Xi Jinping called him to discuss a potential deal—an assertion that was swiftly denied by Beijing. For now, it seems both sides are posturing, testing who will blink first.
