The move follows growing concerns over the role of outdated vehicles in fatal road accidents and Dhaka’s worsening air pollution. According to data from transport authorities, over 75,000 such vehicles are currently in use across Bangladesh, many of which lack valid fitness certificates and pose significant safety and health risks.

Under the new rule, any vehicle falling under this age category will no longer be permitted to run in the capital. Authorities have made it clear that vehicles violating the rule will be seized and sent for scrapping without exception.

The Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges is also considering financial assistance packages and easier access to loans to help owners replace aging vehicles with modern alternatives. The proposed measures aim to support transport businesses and reduce resistance to the new law.

This ban marks one of the most decisive actions taken in recent years to address Dhaka’s traffic chaos and deteriorating environmental conditions.
