After years of anticipation, Rockstar Games has officially delayed the release of Grand Theft Auto 6 until May 2026. Initially slated for a 2025 launch, the long-awaited sequel will now arrive exclusively on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, leaving last-gen players out of luck.
Rockstar says the delay is necessary to deliver a game that meets the sky-high expectations of fans. “We want to make sure GTA 6 is everything you deserve,” the studio said in a statement.
Despite the disappointment, many fans remain supportive, pointing to Rockstar’s history of delivering genre-defining titles. After all, GTA V became the second-best-selling game of all time, largely thanks to its immersive online world.
The delay adds to the studio’s reputation for perfectionism — their last major game, Red Dead Redemption 2, also faced delays before achieving critical acclaim. Still, memes and fan frustration are flooding social media, with many joking about growing old before the next GTA finally arrives.
